Taking on an older dog

The Joys of Adopting an Older Dog
Originally we were looking for a puppy to add to our family. We have two children, one 9 and one 13. The
children and I were keen to adopt a small breed and we had been doing our homework to find a suitable breed. In the past I had owned a Silky Terrier and my father also had a dog of this breed. We liked them very much. One day whilst at my father's he suggested we have a look at the Yorkshire Terrier. We were very interested to say the least. They are small, but more importantly they are intelligent and their temperament is friendly and engaging. We searched the net for reputable breeders and made a series of enquiries. Jan, from Yetholme Yorkies was
incredibly kind and generous with her knowledge and our needs. Jan suggested that we consider an older dog. I am glad we did. We adopted a 7 year old female, Dusty and she has been a wonderful addition to our family. She is friendly, obedient and came to us already incredibly well trained. She is a cuddly bundle who thoroughly enjoys keeping you company while you sit and watch TV or read a book. She appears to be as happy as us to be a part of our family. She loves her walks, she runs madly around the pool when we are swimming and is full of energy. A real pocket dynamo at times. Dusty has her own preferred individual games that she will play with each of us. She will play chasey with my 9 year old but not with anyone else, however, she plays rough and tumble with anyone, the rougher the better...she can't get enough! She even enjoys trips on the back of my daughter's bike sitting in her backpack. Dusty is always ready to greet us enthusiastically when we come home in the afternoon. She diligently does this with each and every one of us and after a long day it is nice to be truly appreciated. We had not considered adopting an older dog until Jan suggested it but it has turned out to be one of the
best decisions we have made. Kerry (Sydney)
